PrepNow started as an experiment within StudyPoint, a six-time Inc 5000 Honoree and national leader in one-to-one private tutoring. We believe that tutoring – like so many industries – faces disruption via online delivery models, so we launched a pilot to deliver StudyPoint’s high quality tutoring to students via a virtual classroom. The educational outcomes far exceeded our expectations, and as a result we launched the service as a new brand – PrepNow – in late 2011. From there it has been an all-out sprint as new enrollments blew past our projections. In 2012, our first full calendar year, our revenues reached seven figures, and we haven’t even begun to tap our best opportunities.
At our core we’re passionate about two things: helping kids succeed in school, and building a scalable business that can transform the private tutoring market. PrepNow was conceived at StudyPoint, and as such has a number of key advantages. First, we have over a decade of know-how in building and delivering high quality tutoring programs. Since day one StudyPoint has been an innovator in private tutoring, and many of those processes and technologies form the foundation of PrepNow. In that light, we’re years ahead of your average twelve month old start-up. Second, StudyPoint is a large and profitable operation that can serve as an ongoing source of capital for PrepNow, which means we won’t be reliant on or distracted by the constant stress of fund-raising.
Who We are Looking For
Given where we’re headed, we know we need a strong lead at the helm of our technology operations. The role will have three key elements:
- Help shape our technology strategy.
- Lead technology development – both internal and external projects.
- Help build, manage, and groom a technology team.
What You Need To Possess
To be clear, we are not hiring a CTO. Our stage of development (and our general approach to entrepreneurship) dictate that we find a hands on leader – someone who can manage a small team or outside development group, but who is also still willing and happy to be writing code. We believe in the discipline that comes with bootstrapping, and as such everyone here is a team player. As the team, projects, and budgets grow the position may well evolve into a pure management role, but for now you’ll have your sleeves rolled up.
On the soft skills side, we figure our technology needs will be filled with a combination of internal development and outside partners. As such, we need someone who has interfaced with outside software development firms. Likewise, since the internal engineering team will be yours to build and lead, we need someone who has helped recruit, screen, onboard, and manage new software developers.
